Arts, culture and heritage events aren’t strictly passive.  They’re also about rolling up your sleeves and PARTICIPATING.  In 2009, we want you to have the chance to do more than watch; we encourage your participation.  By joining the creative process, you will learn new skills, help tell Whistler's story, and even join the entire community in ringing in 2010.  What better way to have a great time and leave your mark on Whistler 's 2009 Cultural Capital of Canada celebrations.

Check out these opportunities to participate through workshop learning, creating, and volunteering:

ArtWalk Workshops

Where: Around Town
When: June, July, August

Since 2004, Whistler’s acclaimed ArtWalk has showcased local and regional artists in various, high-profile Village venues.  ArtWalk offers artists the rare opportunity to show their work to a diverse audience over an extended period of time in a settings as diverse as cafes and hotels as well as galleries.

Well, ArtWalk’s expanding!  In partnership with the Whistler Museum & Archives and the Spo7ez Cultural Centre, ArtWalk is, well, walking.  Participating artists will lead guided tours through the art installations during the months of July and August.  The tours will offer an artist's eye view of work on display, Whistler’s natural history and the local arts scene.  Tours will culminate in a visit to the Spo7ez Cultural Centre.

But as they say on late-night infomercials, that’s not all!  ArtWalk programming will also showcase interactive demonstrations by local artists.  See the voodoo that they do at outdoor venues around Whistler Village.

And just to make an irresistable offer even better, Funciton Junction will open up every Friday evening with the Open Studios program.  Visit the workshops and studios of some of Whistler’s best-known artists down at one of Whistler’s least-known parts of town.  Watch works of art appear before your very eyes… or at least take shape.

Art Workshops on the Lake

Where: Alta Lake
When: June, July, August

Since the first people stumbled into the valley we call Whistler, they’ve been inspired.  And why not?  Rugged mountains, towering forests, delicate flora, diverse fauna, crystal-clear lakes and glaciers touching the heavens have that effect on people, particularly artistic people.

Since 2006, Whistler Art Workshops on the Lake, along with the Artist-in-Residence program, have been helping seasoned and budding artists channel that inspiration onto paper and canvas.  Set in the Chaplinville House, a heritage home on the shore of Alta Lake, these one to four day workshops offer instruction in oil, acrylic and watercolour painting at introductory to advanced levels.

This year’s expanded workshops will be led by resident artists from around Canada.  If you want to channel your inner artist and improve your eye and skills, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in this magnificent natural setting and learn from masters.

Cultural Capital Theatre Project

Where: Maurice Young Millennium Place
When: 2009

All the world’s a stage and all the people… have ideas about what should be played out on it.  We’ve got some ideas too.  And we’ve got some talented local writers to bring those ideas to life.  Our life.  Yours too.

As part of the year-long Cultural Capital of Canada programming, we’ll be bringing those writers together with other Canadian talent: an award-winning director, seasoned musicians, and professional actors.  The result of this collaborative creative process will be an original work for the stage, a Whistler story or, perhaps, Whistler: The Musical.

Incorporating universal themes of love, heartache and, of course, deep powder, the production will embrace the spirit of the place and people, the energy and ethos, passion and pathos that make Whistler what it is.

Commissioned by produced locally, the My Theatre Project will combine a compelling story and an original musical score.  Workshops open to the public will highlight the development of the project give the public a chance to see the shape of things to come.

If you’re interested in getting involved in the My Theatre Project — or just have some good ideas —  contact Louise Lundy, General Manager, Maurice Young Millennium Place.  www.myplacewhistler.org (604)935-8410
