A Cultural Journey Youth Paddle Program
First Nations Youth Paddle Carving Program
When: July & August 2009
Where: The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre
Don’t be caught up the creek without a paddle. The Spo7ez Cultural Centre and Community Society launches its unique Youth Paddle Carving Program this summer. Bridging cultures, the program brings together 15 young people from the Squamish and Lil’wat first nations and non-Native youth drawn from Whistler community organizations. Working together, under the guidance and supervision of a master carver, they will artistically craft cedar canoe paddles. The paddles, culturally symbolic of moving forward together through teamwork, will take shape on the grounds of the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre.
The Paddle Carving Program is a local contribution to this year’s launch of the Cultural Journey Sea-to-Sky. Designed to celebrate First Nations presence and culture in the region, Cultural Journey Sea-to-Sky will redesign highway signage and interpretive roadside pull-outs and distribute on-line and printed tourist maps throughout the corridor. Aboriginal Youth Ambassadors will also be on hand at prominent tourist venues to further enliven this rich cultural history.
